Mario Mendez

Biography:


He studied at the Conservatory of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid and the Master’s Degree in Opera at the Joaquín Rodrigo Conservatory in Valencia. In his training as a singer, he has been in the hands of prestigious teachers such as María Orán, Victoria Manso, Juan Lomba, Manuel Cid, Ofelia Sala, Raúl Giménez, Jorge de León, Celso Albelo, among others.


In his career and, within the operatic repertoire, he has debuted, the roles of Cecco („Il mondo della luna“, Haydn), Bastian („Bastien und Bastienne“, Mozart) and Tamino („Die Zauberflöte“, Mozart), among others. In his repertoire, there are also roles such as Hoja de Sauce („The Fairy Queen“, Purcell, Ópera de Tenerife), Doctor Búho and Zorro („Pinocchio“, Pierangelo Valtinoni, Teatro de la Zarzuela), Rustighello („Lucrezia Borgia“, Donizetti, Ópera de Tenerife) and La Bruja („Hänsel und Gretel“, Humperdinck, Ópera de Tenerife).

In zarzuela the are worth mentioning roles such as Soldado (”La Cantada vida y muerte del General Malbrú”, Jacinto Valledor, Teatro de la Zarzuela), El Niño de Algeciras („La Marchenera“, Moreno Torroba, Teatro de la Zarzuela), Serafín („Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente“, Chueca, Teatro Cuyás de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), Franz („El Carillón de Brujas“, world premiere of A. L. Wagener, Palau de Altea) and Julián („La Verbena de la Paloma“, Tomás Bretón, Amigos Canarios de la Zarzuela at the Teatro Cuyás). In symphonic repertoire, he has performed the Magnificat (Pergolesi, Auditorio Alfredo Kraus), The Messiah (Haendel, Academia de Música Religiosa de Cuenca), Misa Dominicus in C major KV66 (Mozart, Auditorio Municipal de Aldaia), Mahagonny songspiel (Kurt Weill, for the „44. Fränkische Musiktage Alzenau, Festival der Jungen“ in Frankfurt, role of Bill) and recitals in halls and theatres such as the Aula Magna (Fundación Mapfre Guanarteme), Fundación Juan March, Sala Iturbi del Palau de la Música de Valencia, Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Valencia, Teatro Pérez Galdós.


The young tenor has been given the Extraordinary and Specialty Award of the Professional Conservatory of Music of LPGC; finalist in the „Maria Oran“ ompetition in Tenerife (Canary Islands); finalist in the contest „Juventudes musicales de España“, where he obtained the scholarship „Bärenreiter“, and finalist in the contest of the „Asociación Wagneriana de Madrid“.
