Countertenor Mikel Uskola performs a broad range of music ranging from baroque opera and polyphony to post-romantic songs and recently composed pieces, trying to expand and explore new repertoire options for countertenors.
He was an award winner in the 88th edition of “Concurso Permantente de Jóvenes Intérpretes.
He graduated from Royal College of Music London and continued into the master’s programme, which he completed in 2019 with Distinction.
Among the complete operatic roles he has sung are: Goffredo (Rinaldo) in Auditorio Ribarroja, Didymus (Theodora) and Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice) both in concert version in Auditorio CSMV, as well as Prinz Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus). He has been involved in English Touring Opera’s tour productions of Handel’s Giulio Cesare and Rameau’s Dardanus. He has also performed excerpts from Oberón (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Tolomeo (Giulio Cesare), Rinaldo (Rinaldo), Bertarido (Rodelinda) and Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice) at Britten Theatre in Londres, as well as Refuggee (Flight) and Fox (The adventures of Pinocchio) both composed by Jonathan Dove.
Mikel’s oratorio work includes Requiem in D minor (W.A. Mozart) with Michael Thomas, Magnificat in D major (J.S. Bach) at Palau de la Música Valenciana, Membra Iesu Nostri (D. Buxtehude) for Sagunt in Excelsis ancient music festival, B minor mass (J.S. Bach) at Auditorio CSMV and Carmina Burana (C. Orff) in Quincena Musical de San Sebastián, as well as alongside Orfeón Donostiarra.
He has also taken part in several ancient music festivals such as Festival de Música Antigua de Renaixement and Early Music Morella performing Il Festino (A. Banchieri) with Carles Magraner, as part of “Academia Capella dels Ministrers”, as well as alongside Los Afectos Diversos in Festival Internacional de Arte Sacro de la Comunidad de Madrid, Festival Internacional de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza and Festival Internacional de Música de Santander.
Mikel is also active as a recitalist, with appearances in venues such as Teatro Victoria Eugenia de San Sebastián, Teatre Metropol de Tarragona, Claustre del
Seminari within Festival de Música de Verano de Ciutadella or St Mary Abbot’s in London. He has also toured Cataluña with programmes combining baroque
and Spanish music.
It is important to highlight his work in the recovery of Basque repertoire with pianist Josu Okiñena, with whom he has recently recorded a soon to be
published CD performing sacred music composed by Father Donostia.
Upcoming events include a concert with maestro Eduardo López Banzo in Auditorio Ciudad de León and a recital tour around Balearic Islands and North of Spain in collaboration with Juventudes Musicales, performing music by A. Berg, F. Schubert and R. Strauss.
He will also be taking part in Ópera de Oviedo’s 2022/2023 season as a cover for Carlos Mena in a production of La dama del alba by L. Vázquez del Fresno.
